To Whom It May Concern,
I am pleased to nominate Captain Tyler K. Olson for Outstanding Member of the Quarter. Captain Olson consistently demonstrates an exceptional level of commitment, leadership, and dedication to the Ferndale Volunteer Fire Company. His contributions go far beyond simply responding to calls; he continually works behind the scenes and in the firehouse to make sure our members, apparatus, and organization are prepared to succeed.
Captain Olson routinely staffs the firehouse twice a week, giving his time to ensure that crews are available, and the station is ready to respond when the community needs us. His commitment to our members is also evident in the additional time he gives to help others succeed. Recently, Captain Olson volunteered for extra shifts to assist an EMT student in completing the required ambulance rides for their EMT class. Rather than simply meeting his own responsibilities, he recognized what another member needed and made himself available to help that individual complete their training.
Captain Olson also plays an active role in maintaining and improving our apparatus. He recently swapped out the lights on the Squad, taking the time to make sure the unit was properly equipped and maintained. These types of projects may not always receive recognition, but they are essential to keeping our equipment safe, functional, and ready for the next emergency. During the months of July and August, our area experienced numerous severe thunderstorms. Captain Olson stepped up during these challenging periods by staffing Brush 34, ultimately accumulating 38 Brush 34 responses during the storms. His willingness to be there when the demand for emergency services was high provided an invaluable resource to the company and the community. Perhaps one of Captain Olson’s most significant contributions recently has been his involvement with our new ambulance. When the station purchased the new unit, Captain Olson took an active role from the beginning. He helped design the graphics for the ambulance and then spent dozens of hours and multiple days modifying, stocking, organizing, and preparing the unit. He also worked closely with the county to ensure that the ambulance met the necessary requirements and was properly equipped and ready to be placed into service. His attention to detail and willingness to dedicate countless hours to the project helped ensure that when the new ambulance was needed, it was ready to serve our community.
Captain Olson’s dedication also extends well beyond emergency response and station operations through his involvement in Fire Prevention and Public Education. He helps run and participate in community outreach activities, including school visits, church visits, water events, and community festivals. At these events, Captain Olson takes the time to interact with members of the community and educate them about fire and life safety. Whether he is teaching children about fire safety, speaking with families about emergency preparedness, or helping residents understand how to keep their homes safe, he understands that preventing an emergency is just as important as responding to one. His efforts help educate our community on how to protect themselves, their children, and their homes, while also strengthening the relationship between the fire company and the people we serve.
As the Operational Leader under the Chief, Captain Olson is someone the company can depend on. Whenever help is needed, he is there to make sure our crews have the equipment, resources, and support necessary to succeed. He leads by example and understands that being an officer is not simply about holding a title; it is about being willing to put in the work and support the members around you. Even on days when Captain Olson is not scheduled to staff, he can frequently be found checking on the station, the apparatus, and the members. His dedication does not end when his scheduled shift does. He continually looks for ways to make our company better and to ensure that our members are supported.
Captain Tyler K. Olson exemplifies what it means to be a dedicated volunteer firefighter and officer. His commitment to staffing, training, apparatus readiness, member development, and operational leadership makes a tremendous difference to the Ferndale Volunteer Fire Company. He consistently gives his time, knowledge, and energy without hesitation, and his efforts directly benefit both our members and the community we serve.
For these reasons, I strongly recommend Captain Tyler K. Olson for Outstanding Member of the Quarter. His dedication, leadership, and willingness to go above and beyond make him highly deserving of this recognition.
Sincerely,
Chief Jay Olson Ferndale Volunteer Fire Company |
