The Anne Arundel Firefighters Emerald Society will host the First Responder Readiness Series on
Thursday, June 4, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. This free virtual education event is designed for first responders and
their families and will feature practical topics related to health, wellness, financial readiness, legal
considerations, injury prevention, sleep, and long-term planning.
The program will include multiple 45-minute sessions presented by speakers with experience and subject
matter knowledge in areas relevant to public safety personnel. Attendees will have the opportunity to
select sessions that are most applicable to their current needs, career stage, or family situation.
Planned sessions include topics such as mental health and resilience, sleep health for shift workers,
financial planning with awareness of Anne Arundel County retirement considerations, injury prevention
and physical readiness, legal planning, and related issues that affect first responders both on and off the
job.
The series will also include a session on CSST fires and related case studies, led by Sara Laird and
Celeste Flynn, the widows of Frederick County Battalion Chief Josh Laird and Howard County
Lieutenant Nate Flynn. This session will provide a direct and personal review of the dangers associated
with CSST fires and the incidents that resulted in the deaths of Chief Laird and Lieutenant Flynn. It is
expected to be one of the most important and impactful sessions offered during the program.
The Emerald Society is a nonprofit organization that supports first responders and their families during
times of illness, injury, hardship, and loss. In addition to direct support and relief efforts, the organization
works to connect members of the public safety community with resources, education, and opportunities
that may benefit them throughout their careers and into retirement.
Registration is open now at: aaemerald.com/readiness
This event is free to attend. Members of all ranks (including civilians), retirees, and family members are
encouraged to register and participate in any sessions that may be helpful to them.
