For 38-years, Samuel Ahmuty, Sr. gave freely of his friendship and experience in support of the fire and emergency service in Anne Arundel County through this active membership in the Odenton Volunteer Fire Company and the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firemen’s Association.
Captain Sam, as he was affectionately known to his friends, became a member of the Odenton Volunteer Fire Company in January 1943, his age and health precluded active participation in suppression activities. However, he lent his full support to the administrative duties at hand with all the dedication and energy of a back-step firefighter. Sam served for 19-years as a member of the Board of Directors of the fire company including 10-years as President. He was always visible as an organizer of numerous committees and fundraising activities. In recognition of his outstanding service, the company awarded him Life Membership in 1969, and dedicated a new pumper in his honor in 1977.
When Sam was not to be found in Odenton, he was traveling throughout the county in support of the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firemen’s Association, which he equally loved and served for over 30-years. Sam was Chairman and member of the Scholarship, Convention, and numerous other committees. He served as a Trustee from 1954-1958 and 1961-1973. In 1971, the Association recognized him as the Anne Arundel County Firemen of the Year, and shortly thereafter awarded him the title of “Trustee Emeritus” in appreciation of his many years of devoted service. He was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1997.
Captain Sam was inducted into the Maryland State Firemen’s Association Hall of Fame “in honor and with deep appreciation for his unselfish efforts and distinguished service” on 19 June 1984.
