Sean G. McKeever
2019 GREG CROFT ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD
Odenton Volunteer Fire Company

Sean McKeever joined the Odenton Volunteer Fire Company (OVFC) in October 2017.  In less than two years, he has become one of OVFC’s most active responders.  He has completed all training requirements to be qualified to ride in Anne Arundel County including Hazmat Operations and Firefighter 1.  He became qualified to ride in just over seven months, an almost unheard of period of time given the number of requirements and class scheduling challenges, clearly demonstrating his high level of commitment.

Sean went on to complete the Emergency Medical Technician course, as well as achieving certification as a Firefighter I by the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro-Board) within his first 18-months of membership.  He has also recently completed the MFRI Rescue Technician – Vehicle and Machinery Extrication course, enabling him to become qualified to respond on OVFC’s rescue engine.  Since becoming a member, Sean has completed more than 320 hours of training.  He also responded on 156 fire calls in 2018, making him a top 15 responder.  He accomplished this when he did not become qualified to ride OVFC’s apparatus until May of 2018.

Sean sustained this level of commitment to OVFC in addition to his demanding, full-time career as a Captain in the United States Air Force.  Originally from Ohio, he was commissioned into the Air Force in 2011 as a System Engineer, ultimately being stationed at Fort George G. Meade, MD in 2015.  He is currently assigned to the Defense Information Management Agency as a Unified Capabilities Project Manager, where he is responsible for the sustainment and modernization of network infrastructure in support of United States Military Operations on the Korean Peninsula.

Sean is a member of both the Thursday and Saturday night duty crews which allows OVFC to provide continuous service to the community.  He continuously strives to improve both himself and the OVFC.  He consistently seeks self-improvement and opportunities to lead, be it pushing to learn the “front seat” duties on the engines or taking charge of clean-up duties.  He has led efforts to document equipment inventories of OVFC’s two engines, ladder truck, and ambulance, with the goal of producing graphic documents that can be used from both inventory and the training of new members.  Sean recently received a Gift of Life award from the Anne Arundel County Fire Department along with the other members of his crew for reviving a cardiac arrest victim.

Sean is a role model and mentor for many of the OVFC younger members.  Despite his short tenure of membership, he demonstrates many of the leadership skills that are required to continue the success of the OVFC in the future.
