CIRCUMSTANCES OF DEATH: The apparatus Chief Barton was responding to a reported house fire on, overturned. “The driver was attempting to avoid a road scraper and over turned in the soft dirt on Tick Neck Road (The Capital).” Chief Barton’s death was very similar to Firefighter John Balcer’s death in 1970 – same station, almost same location.
BURIAL LOCATION: Loudon Park Cemetery – 3620 Wilkens Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21229. (Baltimore County adc map 42-b-2. Front of the Chapel, Cedar lot 321, grave #5. Grave unmarked – Large memorial to Lillian Estella Barton. Chief Barton is also buried at this location! (Historical Larrimore Monument).

RIVIERA BEACH FIRE CHIEF KILLED IN CO.
Fire Chief J. E. Barton of Riviera Beach, was killed instantly yesterday when a fire truck overturned on the Tick Neck Road in Anne Arundel County. An inquest has been ordered for tomorrow.
Cw. W. Schaefer, driver of the truck, is said to have attempted to avoid a road scraper and overturned in the soft dirt. Schaefer was uninjured and another fireman on the truck also escaped unscathed.
The truck had been to a small fire at Fort Smallwood and was near Riviera Beach when the accident accurred.
